Ari Feldman has for many years offered a free sprite library, which is now under GPL license. You can download the sprite library here. The graphics are pretty good, and they’re great to get you started. He has a complete set of the Battle of Britain (1945), a platform game, Arinoid (Ari’s ripoff of Arkanoid), Space Invaders, and a few more.
